Jars and Bottles is expanding as it continues to win business providing jars to international food producers.

Jars and Bottles, on South Humberside Industrial Estate, has been gradually expanding its footprint, taking on neighbouring units as they have become available, to the point where it owns its own ‘island’.

Now, the appropriately named Atlas House, is having the office facilities doubled and production space re-modelled in a £350,000 investment.

David Mann, managing director, said:

“This is all led by growth, we are bursting at the seams. We have got to a stage where we are again looking to recruit into the business, at least four new people into various roles.”

The elaborate construction work will double the office facilities, and also includes the creation of a roof terrace, with the aim of making the building – where a contemporary show room was added as part of a £750,000 new build programme four years ago – a nicer place for clients to stay.

“It is quite an extensive extension,” said Mr Mann. “We really struggle to get people here and to stay here. What we have decided will hopefully address the issue of how we can keep people here for the day, and keep them enthused.

“When we go buying, to Portugal, Spain and Italy, they have enough going on to keep you interested for the day, and make it worth your while. We want to be focused on the customer and how you can look after them.”

Regional Growth Fund finance has helped support the significant private investment by the business, which also deals in health and beauty markets.

“This has come off the back of a really good year of growth,” said Mr Mann. “It has been great, with an extra £2.2 million of turnover, which is quite significant when jars are 10p.

“A lot of it has come off the back of good sales, as well as good purchasing, it has all come together well. We do see that being consolidated, or continuing for the coming year; it will be a year of keeping what we have, while also pulling up the building work.”

The building is named after the jar range used in the first major retail order received, for a Sainsbury’s cooking sauce.

“This estate is really getting busy,” he added. “When we came here it was pretty derelict, but more have come and it seems to be on the up. We have gradually built up ‘the island’, and we are making the whole place more efficient.”

Mr Mann praised his operations director Mark Schofield for the work on the bid. “He has done a great job securing that,” he said. Laceby-based Bannister Developments is on site and CR Parrott have also worked the plan up.

J&B s is now working with UK Trade and Investment, taking in visits to Iceland and Denmark, to explore more opportunities.
